CUP: NASCAR Stars Mourn Loss Of Shelby

Friday afternoon at Darlington Raceway, word began to filter through the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage about the loss of racing legend Carroll Shelby, one of the true heroes and icons of American motorsports. Here’s what some of today’s NASCAR participants had to say about Shelby.

“He just was so innovative. I just love when people are forward-thinking and have a passion for cars, whether they’re sports cars or these (NASCAR) cars. I have a bond with anybody that appreciates cars at all, and he was just so into the automobile. I think it’s a day ... if you hear about me passing at 89, let’s be celebrating. So I think it’s a day we celebrate his life and just be thankful he touched us.” — Michael Waltrip

“He was a good friend of Roger’s (Penske), first and foremost, which I thought was really important to note. He’ll be missed by everybody at Penske Racing. Penske has this deal about appreciating racers and the things they do. He was definitely a racer. It’s a shame to see him go and we’ll all just remember the mark he left on the sport and automobiles in general.” — Brad Keselowski

Rangers' Josh Hamilton is high-risk high-reward

Giants fans are all over the place with opinions on whether the team should signTim Lincecum to a contract surpassing $100 million, but imagine the views in Texas on Josh Hamilton.

Hamilton has surpassed Matt Kemp as the most productive hitter in the majors, batting .402 with 18 homers and 41 RBIs, leading the American League in all three categories.

Lincecum's slow start is a red flag for fans (at least according to talk-show and social media fodder) who question whether an extension for five or more years makes sense, even suggesting a trade could be preferable if it beefs up an offense that needs beefing up - as goofy as that might have sounded a few months ago.

With Hamilton, there's absolutely no concern about production. It's about a history of addiction and injuries and whether he's too risky to commit all that money for all those years.

Auto legend Carroll Shelby, father of Cobra, dies!

Carroll Hall Shelby, the Texan who created the famous Shelby Cobra and uncounted other high-performance machines that have enlivened -- and in some cases revolutionized -- the auto world for 50 years, died Thursday night in Dallas at age 89. He had been hospitalized for pneumonia and his death was announced today by his company, Shelby American.
